Camino De Santiago, Spain
Our Itinerary
-
The walk from Sarria to Portomarín (approximately 22 km) begins in the lively medieval streets of Sarria before quickly transitioning into quiet rural Galicia. After passing Barbadelo and its Romanesque church, the trail becomes a mix of paved village lanes, dirt farm tracks, shaded forest paths, and gentle rolling countryside. Pilgrims move through small hamlets including Cruce, Peruscallo, Morgade, and Ferreiros, where cafés provide natural regroup and rest points. The terrain is moderately undulating but manageable, with eucalyptus groves, open farmland, and traditional stone houses defining the scenery. After Mercadoiro and the vineyard area of Vilachá, the route gradually descends toward the Miño River, crossing into Portomarín — a town famously rebuilt stone by stone above a reservoir — marking a symbolic and scenic conclusion to the first day.
